A tooth extraction is a fairly straightforward dental procedure. Sometimes, when a tooth becomes too damaged or decayed, the only option remaining may be to remove the tooth. A tooth may be also removed for cosmetic reasons or in preparation for a particular treatment.
Your dentist will always try to restore or preserve a tooth when possible. However, in the circumstance that an extraction is deemed necessary, we will aim to make the appointment as pleasant and comfortable for you as possible.
Prior to the extraction, your dentist will discuss available tooth replacement options with you.
Your dentist will walk you through the procedure prior to the extraction. You will also be given information on tooth replacement options.
Your extraction will take place under a local anaesthetic for a pain-free treatment. We can also offer sedation upon request. Your dentist will dress your gums to stop any bleeding which should only last for a few minutes.
Your dentist will give you plenty of information on aftercare, and you may also be prescribed painkillers. It is possible that we may invite you for a follow up appointment to ensure you have healed properly, and that there have not been any further complications.
The treatment is performed under local anaesthetic (or sedation, if requested) so you should not feel any pain.
You may however experience some pressure when the dentist removes the tooth.
A number of tooth replacement options are available such as dental implants, bridges, and dentures. Your dentist will discuss your available options prior to treatment.
