Looking After Your Teeth Without the Worry

Avoiding the dentist because of nerves is more common than you might think, but small problems left alone tend to grow into bigger, more uncomfortable ones. Sedation dentistry helps break that cycle, giving you a way to have the care you need while feeling relaxed, rather than waiting until pain forces the decision.
At Alaska House Dental Practice, we never judge how long it’s been or why. We offer both oral sedation and IV sedation, and we’ll take the time to listen to your concerns and talk through which option feels right for you. Our priority is that you feel heard, comfortable and in control, at a pace that suits you.

Understanding Dental Sedation

Dental sedation uses medication to help you feel deeply relaxed during treatment. At Alaska House Dental Practice, we offer conscious sedation, so you stay awake and able to respond to us, but feel calm, drowsy and less aware of what’s happening. This is different from a general anaesthetic, which leaves you fully unconscious. A local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area.
Oral sedation is a prescribed tablet taken before your appointment, so the calm builds gradually with no needle needed. It often suits mild to moderate anxiety. IV sedation is given through a small cannula in the hand or arm, working within minutes, with the dose adjusted as needed. It is often chosen for stronger anxiety, dental phobia or longer treatment. Many patients remember little afterwards, though this varies. We monitor you throughout and will help you choose the right option, as sedation isn’t suitable for everyone.

The Right Candidate

Importance of Conscious Sedation
Dentistry

There are several reasons why conscious dental sedation may be the right choice for you, such as:

Takes the edge off your nerves

Rather than bracing for every sound and sensation, you can settle into a calmer, more relaxed state and let your treatment happen around you.

Two options to suit you

Oral sedation and IV sedation work differently and suit different levels of anxiety, so you can choose the one that feels right after talking it through with us.

A needle-free option

If needles are your biggest worry, we offer oral sedation, a tablet to be taken before your appointment, offering a gentler route to feeling relaxed.

Deeper relaxation when you need it

IV sedation takes effect quickly and can be adjusted during your appointment, making it well suited to stronger anxiety, dental phobia or longer treatment.

A calmer memory of your visit

Many patients remember little of their appointment afterwards, although this varies. For many, that means the next visit feels far less daunting.

Care that no longer has to wait

By making appointments feel manageable, sedation helps you keep up with the dental care you need, before small problems have the chance to become bigger ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are short answers to the questions we hear frequently from our patients about this treatment.

Will I be asleep during dental sedation?
No. Conscious sedation keeps you awake, breathing on your own and able to respond to us. You’ll feel deeply relaxed and drowsy, and many patients remember little afterwards. A general anaesthetic, by contrast, leaves you fully unconscious.
Yes. You’ll need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. Avoid driving, alcohol, machinery and important decisions for 24 hours, so plan a quiet day.
We’ll talk it through at your consultation, considering your anxiety, past experiences, medical history and treatment. Oral sedation often suits milder nerves or needle-averse patients, while IV sedation is often chosen for stronger anxiety or longer treatment.

Your Treatment Journey

Each patient’s experience is different, but this is what you can expect while undergoing treatment at Alaska House Dental Practice.

We begin with a relaxed chat about how you feel, your past experiences and medical history. Together we choose between oral and IV sedation, with guidance on eating, drinking and arranging an escort.
On the day, you’ll take your tablet as advised for oral sedation, or have a cannula placed for IV sedation. Once calm and drowsy, treatment begins under local anaesthetic, with your comfort monitored.
Afterwards, you’ll rest at the practice until you’re ready to leave, and your escort will take you home. We’ll talk through aftercare, so you know what to do over the next 24 hours.

I honestly can’t thank Alex enough. He completely transformed my smile and I’m so happy with the results. From the moment I walked in, he made me feel comfortable, relaxed, and cared for. His attention to detail and talent are amazing, and you can tell he really takes pride in his work. My smile looks so natural and I’ve had so many compliments already. For the first time in a long time, I feel truly confident smiling. Couldn’t recommend Alex more highly. A++++++

Appointments nearly always on time, or within 10 minutes. Super friendly staff. Great to always see the same dentist, and dental Hygienist each time, rather than someone different. Very happy with the service and care at Alaska house

I haven't been to a dentist in years for probably same reasons as to why others haven't & the thought literally ran shivers down my spine. I can honestly say that at every visit I've had so far they have all put me at ease each time. Amit & today Nicole are both fantastic, thorough & professional. You only get one set of gnashers it's definitely worth digging into your pockets. Look after your teeth and they will look after you.
